How DEX Screener Trending Works — and Why Trending Doesn't Mean Safe
What goes into DEX Screener's trending score, how boosts and paid info affect it, and why a trending token still needs a safety check before you buy.
TRENCHSCORE RESEARCH··3 MIN READ
For many traders, DEX Screener's trending list is the memecoin market. Landing in the top spots can bring thousands of new eyes in minutes. Understanding how that list is built — and what it isn't — will make you a much more careful buyer.
//What DEX Screener says goes into trending
DEX Screener assigns each token a Trending Score. It keeps the exact formula private, but its documentation describes three groups of inputs:
- Market activity: volume, liquidity, transactions, unique makers and holders.
- Community engagement: visits to the token's page on the website and app, and reactions such as the rocket, fire, poop and red-flag emojis.
- Trust and credibility: verified token info gets a boost — especially Enhanced Token Info — and DEX Screener says it values tokens that are open-source and pass security checks.
Trending is usually viewed across several windows (5 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours, 24 hours), and a token competes against other active pairs on the same chain at the same time.
//Where boosts come in
Boosts are paid packs that temporarily increase a token's Trending Score. DEX Screener describes them as a multiplier on the existing score that lasts 12–24 hours depending on the pack, not a replacement for the other metrics. Tokens with 500 or more active boosts get a golden ticker. Tokens inactive for over 24 hours or flagged by DEX Screener's audit partners can't be boosted.
So a trending spot is a mix of genuine activity and money spent on visibility. That's not inherently bad — real projects market themselves — but it means trending is partly an ad slot. More in DEX paid, boosts and ads.
//Why trending ≠ safe
- Activity can be manufactured. Volume, transactions and makers can be farmed with bots. See wash trading.
- Visibility can be bought. Boosts and paid profiles lift scores.
- Security filters are a floor, not a verdict. Passing a third-party scan at one moment doesn't cover insider supply, unlocked liquidity, or a contract that can change later.
- Trending rewards right now. It's a measure of the last few hours, and memecoin hours are long.
//How to use trending well
Treat trending as a discovery feed, not a recommendation:
- 01Find tokens with attention.
- 02Paste the contract into a safety tool and check the contract, liquidity and holders.
- 03Check whether the activity is real (unique traders, holder growth, varied trade sizes).
- 04Check how much of the visibility is paid.
- 05Only then decide.
//How the Trench 100 differs
The Trench 100 starts from many of the same public signals — trending lists, boosts and new listings — but every candidate gets a full scan before it can be ranked. Confirmed scams are dropped outright, and the rest are ranked by a TrenchScore that weighs momentum against contract safety, holder health, community and market structure. Paid promotion is shown openly on each row so you can see it, not hidden inside a score.
//Frequently asked questions
How does DEX Screener decide trending tokens?+
DEX Screener gives each token a private Trending Score based on market activity (volume, liquidity, transactions, unique makers, holders), community engagement (page visits and reactions) and trust signals like verified token info and security checks. Paid boosts multiply that score temporarily.
Can you pay to trend on DEX Screener?+
You can buy boosts, which temporarily multiply a token's Trending Score, and Enhanced Token Info, which DEX Screener counts as a trust signal. They don't guarantee a top spot without underlying activity.
Are trending tokens safe to buy?+
Not necessarily. Trending reflects recent activity and partly paid visibility. Always check the contract, liquidity, holders and whether the activity is organic before buying.
