Pump.fun Bonding Curves and Graduation, Explained

How Pump.fun's bonding curve prices new tokens, what 'graduating' to a DEX means, how few tokens make it, and what to check before and after graduation.

TRENCHSCORE RESEARCH··3 MIN READ

Pump.fun changed how Solana memecoins launch. Instead of a creator adding liquidity to a DEX pool, every token starts on a bonding curve — and only the ones that attract enough buyers graduate to a real DEX pool. Understanding that path tells you a lot about where a token is in its life.

//What is a bonding curve?

A bonding curve is a formula that sets the token's price based on how many tokens have been bought. Early buyers pay very little; every purchase moves the price up the curve, and every sell moves it back down. There's no external liquidity provider — the curve itself is the market maker.

Two consequences matter:

  • Early buys are cheap and late buys are expensive. Whoever buys in the first seconds — often snipers and bundled wallets — gets the best price. See bundles, snipers and insider wallets.
  • There's no LP to pull while on the curve. The classic liquidity-pull rug isn't possible at this stage. Dumps still are.

//What is graduation?

When enough has been bought to complete the curve — historically around a $69K market cap on Pump.fun, though launchpads adjust their parameters over time — the token graduates. Its liquidity moves into a DEX pool (Pump.fun's own PumpSwap AMM today; Raydium in the earlier days) and the LP is burned, so it can't be withdrawn. From then on it trades like any other DEX token.

//How many tokens graduate?

Very few. Depending on the period and how it's measured, published figures put Pump.fun's graduation rate at roughly 1–3% of tokens launched — for example, around 0.7–0.9% of launches per day in mid-2025 by simple daily counts, and about 2.7% when each day's cohort is followed forward. A Solidus Labs study of seven million-plus Pump.fun tokens found only about 1.4% kept more than $1,000 of liquidity.

In other words, graduation alone already puts a token in the top few percent of launches. It doesn't make it safe.

//What to check before graduation

  • Holder concentration on the curve. Snipers and the dev can own a big share before the public arrives.
  • Dev wallet activity. Is the creator buying more, holding, or selling into the curve?
  • Bundles. Many wallets buying in the first block is a red flag.
  • Socials. Real communities often exist before graduation; rented hype appears right before it.

//What to check after graduation

//Pump.fun contract basics

Tokens launched through Pump.fun are created with mint and freeze authority revoked, and the LP is burned at graduation, so several contract risks covered in mint and freeze authority explained are already handled. The remaining risks are almost all about people: who holds the supply and what they do with it.

//How TrenchScore handles graduated tokens

TrenchScore's ranking picks up newly graduated and trending Solana tokens alongside every other chain. Once a token has a DEX pool, we scan its holders, wallet clusters, liquidity, community and momentum, and judge young tokens against expectations for their age. //Frequently asked questions

What does graduating mean on Pump.fun?+

A token graduates when enough has been bought to complete its bonding curve. Its liquidity then migrates to a DEX pool and the LP is burned, so it trades like any other DEX token.

What percentage of Pump.fun tokens graduate?+

Roughly 1–3% depending on the period and measurement method. Daily counts in mid-2025 were under 1%, while cohort-based tracking found about 2.7% in August 2025.

Can a Pump.fun token rug pull?+

It can't pull liquidity in the classic way, because there's no LP on the curve and the LP is burned at graduation. But insiders, snipers and the dev can still dump their supply, which is how most Pump.fun losses happen.
