The First 24 Hours of a New Token: What to Watch, Hour by Hour

Most new tokens are decided in their first day. Learn what normally happens in the first minutes, hours and day after launch, and what separates survivors.

TRENCHSCORE RESEARCH··3 MIN READ

New tokens move fastest and die fastest. Chainalysis found that suspected pump-and-dump tokens were typically abandoned within days of launch — the median was the same day — and on Solana only a small fraction of launches ever hold meaningful liquidity. If you trade new pairs, knowing what normal looks like in the first day is your edge.

//Minutes 0–15: the launch

  • What usually happens: snipers and bots buy instantly; the chart spikes; the creator's wallets may already hold a large share.
  • What to check: contract basics first (mint and freeze authority on Solana; honeypot, tax and ownership on EVM), then how much of the supply was bought in the first block. See bundles, snipers and insider wallets.
  • Warning sign: a large chunk of supply in fresh wallets funded from one source.

//Hour 1: first distribution

  • What usually happens: early buyers take profit. Most tokens lose a big share of their launch spike here.
  • What to check: who's selling — snipers, the dev, or random holders? Is liquidity holding steady or shrinking? See how to read top holders.
  • Good sign: new buyers absorbing the sells, unique traders still rising.

//Hours 1–6: does anyone care?

  • What usually happens: the token either finds a community or fades. Socials appear or don't. Some teams buy promotion here.
  • What to check: holder count growth, a Telegram or X with real conversation, and whether volume is coming from many wallets. See is a crypto community real?
  • Warning sign: volume staying high while holders stay flat — a sign of bots. See wash trading.

//Hours 6–24: structure forms

  • What usually happens: survivors form a base — higher lows, a growing holder list, deeper liquidity. Others bleed out slowly.
  • What to check: volume-to-liquidity turnover settling into a sane range (see the ratio guide), concentration falling as supply spreads, and the dev wallet's behaviour.
  • Good sign: liquidity growing with price, steady buy pressure on the 6h window.

//Judge young tokens on a curve

A six-hour-old token can't have a 10,000-member Telegram or 5,000 holders yet, and it shouldn't be judged as if it should. Fair comparison means expecting less community and holder breadth from young tokens and more from older ones — and measuring activity per hour alive. That's how genuine early traction shows up without favouring tokens that are simply older.

//A first-day checklist

  1. 01Contract clean? (authorities, honeypot, tax, ownership)
  2. 02LP burned or locked? See liquidity locks vs LP burns.
  3. 03Supply spread out, no big clusters?
  4. 04Dev wallet not dumping?
  5. 05Unique traders and holders rising?
  6. 06Liquidity growing, not shrinking?
  7. 07Real people talking about it?

//How TrenchScore treats new tokens

The TrenchScore scales its community and holder expectations with a token's age, and measures momentum relative to how long a token has been trading. That's why fresh tokens with real traction can rank in the Trench 100 next to established ones — and why the Newest view on the homepage is worth checking every few hours.

//Frequently asked questions

How do I find good new tokens early?+

Use new-pair and trending feeds for discovery, then filter hard: clean contract, burned or locked LP, no big wallet clusters, a dev who isn't selling, and rising unique traders. TrenchScore's Newest view shows recently launched tokens that already passed safety checks.

Why do most new tokens dump in the first hour?+

Snipers and early buyers get in at the lowest prices and take profit as soon as the first wave of buyers arrives. Tokens survive if new buyers keep absorbing those sells.
